Cheng Chin-fa

Professional Calligrapher

  • Cheng Chin-fa was born in 1948 in Taiwan and studied Chinese History and Art History in Taipei. He trained in traditional calligraphy under Master Chuang Yen 莊嚴 at the National University of Taiwan and studied ink painting with Ye Shiqiang 葉世強.

Over the decades, he has evolved from the aesthetic of Mi Fu ⽶ 芾 (1051–1107), known for his refined Running Script ⾏书, to an expressive and powerful style called Crazy Grass Script 狂草书 as well as a the picture-like oracle bone script; a style conducive to learning brush fluidity and composition.

  • This style of calligraphy goes back to the earliest form of Chinese writings -the Oracle Bone Inscriptions (OBI): OBI was discovered accidentally in 1899 by Wang Yirong 王懿榮, an official from Beijing, who contracted disease. A doctor prescribed him a medicine containing 'dragon bone' (longgu 龍骨). The pieces of bone he had bought from a traditional pharmacy were covered in ancient carvings resembling Chinese symbols. Being a erudite man his interest was piqued and eventually led to a great discovery of large fragments of inscribed oracle bones in a small village just outside Anyang 安陽, Henan Province 河南).
